Psychosocial Factors Influencing Women’s Choice of Cab Driving in Southwest Nigeria: Untangling the Quandary
Abstract:
The study focused on the psychosocial factors influencing women’s choice of cab driving in southwest Nigeria: Untangling the quandary. Specifically examined how discouragement, traffic and ‘agberos’; unsolicited relationship requests; lack of personal vehicle ownership; and occupational stress influence women’s choice of cab deriving. Three theories underpinned the study. They were survival-based theory, the ownership theory and the resource-based view theory. Descriptive statistics, Pearson product-moment correlation, and multiple regression were adopted. 65 homogeneous purposively sampled female taxi drivers were given an online structured questionnaire as part of an explanatory descriptive survey design. The results showed owning a personal vehicle (R = 0.48, R² = 23%, p < 0.001), traffic and ‘agberos’ interference (R = 0.448, R² = 20.1%, p < 0.001), discouragement (R = 0.38, R² = 14.4%, p = 0.002), requests for relationships (R = 0.327, R² = 10.7%, p = 0.008), and stress (R = 0.325, R² = 10.5%, p = 0.008). These factors had a significant combined effect (R = 0.717, R² = 51.4%, adjusted R² = 47.3%, p < 0.001), indicating that structural and cumulative psychosocial limitations influence women's participation in taxi driving. According to the study's findings, traffic, ‘agberos’, and car ownership are the most significant social, structural, and psychological barriers that limit female participation. Institutional support, skill development, better road and motor park infrastructure, and access to reasonably priced cars are among the recommendations.
