Social and Environmental Disclosures and Financial Performance of Banks in Nigeria
Abstract:
This study examined the interplay between social and environmental disclosures and financial performance of listed banks in Nigeria. An ex post facto research design was adopted, using secondary data extracted from the annual reports of 15 listed banks over the period 2010–2019. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics and panel regression techniques, including pooled ordinary least squares, fixed effects and random effects. Financial performance was measured using return on assets (ROA) and return on equity (ROE), earnings per share (EPS) and leverage while social disclosures was measured using community involvement (CMI), employee concerns (EMC), human right protection (HRP) and product responsibility (PDR); and environemtal disclosure was measured by environmental concervation activities (ECA) and energy concerns (ENC). Results showed that economic cosnservation activities have negative relationship with return on asset, return on equity, leverage and earnings per share. While relationships with others were insignificant, it however had a significant negative relationship with return on asset at 10%. Community involvement activities is reported to have positive but insignificant relationship with return on asset, while return on equity, leverage and earnings per share have negative but insignificant relationship with community involvement activities. Further result shows that product responsibility has a negative but insignificant relationship with return on equity, while it also indicated a positive and insignificant relationship with return on assets, leverage and earnings per share. Even though social and environmental disclosures are voluntary disclosures, however most of the banks concerned contribute in one way or the other in community development initiatives, support for educational programmes, voluntary donations, preservation of the environment, waste management, and host of others.
